South India — A Civilisation Unto Itself

South India is a civilisation unto itself — and the most unexplored part of India for international travellers. The Dravidian temple architecture here soars into the sky with thousand-deity gopurams in blazing colour, classical Bharatanatyam dance fills ancient courtyards, Carnatic music drifts through temple corridors, and a culinary tradition — dosas, idli, sambar, Chettinad pepper chicken — is among the world's great food cultures. This circuit travels from Chennai's colonial Coromandel Coast through the French-flavoured streets of Pondicherry, the extraordinary temple cities of Tamil Nadu, the sacred island of Rameswaram, and finishes in the lush green embrace of Kerala.

Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram (UNESCO) Rameswaram Sacred Corridor Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram Pondicherry French Quarter Periyar Wildlife Safari Kathakali Dance, Kochi Chettinad Cuisine Trail

Your Itinerary

Day 1–2
Chennai & Mahabalipuram
Arrive in Chennai — South India's dynamic capital. Visit the 7th-century Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore and take a walk along Marina Beach, one of the world's longest urban beaches. Drive south (1.5 hrs) to Mahabalipuram — explore the extraordinary Shore Temple (7th-century, UNESCO World Heritage), Arjuna's Penance rock-cut relief, and the Five Rathas monolithic sculptures, all carved from solid granite over 1,300 years ago.
Day 3–4
Pondicherry & Chidambaram
Drive to Pondicherry — one of India's most unexpected cities. The French Quarter's yellow ochre colonial buildings, bougainvillea-draped streets and stylish cafés feel more Provence than Tamil Nadu. Visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the stunning Auroville community. Continue to Chidambaram — the Nataraja Temple, dedicated to Shiva as the cosmic dancer, is one of the most sacred and architecturally extraordinary in all of South India, its four towering gopurams covered in thousands of sculpted deities.
Day 5–6
Madurai — The Temple City
Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth — a living testament to Tamil civilisation. The Meenakshi Amman Temple is its beating heart: a 14-hectare complex of 14 gopurams, 33,000 sculptures, and a sacred tank that has been in use for over 2,000 years. Attend the spectacular evening puja — priests escort the image of Shiva to Meenakshi's chamber in a candlelit procession. Also visit the Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace and the famous Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam tank. Try authentic Chettinad cuisine — arguably Tamil Nadu's greatest culinary tradition.
Day 7
Rameswaram — Sacred Island
Drive to Rameswaram (3 hrs) across the extraordinary Pamban Bridge — one of India's most dramatic sea crossings, running 2km across the Palk Strait. Rameswaram is one of Hinduism's four sacred dhams. The Ramanathaswamy Temple contains the world's longest temple corridor (1,220 metres) lined with 1,000 granite pillars. Visit the haunting ruins of Dhanushkodi — the ghost town swept away by the 1964 cyclone — and the sacred Agnitheertham beach on the shore.
Day 8–9
Munnar & Thekkady (Kerala)
Cross into Kerala through the mountain roads of the Western Ghats. Arrive in Munnar — a highland tea paradise at 1,600 metres. Walk through rolling tea gardens and visit the Tea Museum. Continue to Thekkady and take a boat safari on Periyar Lake — the reservoir at the heart of Periyar Tiger Reserve — watching for wild elephants, sambar deer, otters and rare birds on the forested banks. A spice plantation tour through black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and nutmeg follows.
Day 10
Kochi & International Departure
Drive to Fort Kochi (3 hrs) — one of India's most atmospheric heritage towns. Walk the waterfront past the iconic Chinese fishing nets (unchanged since the 14th century), visit the Dutch Palace at Mattancherry, the 16th-century St. Francis Church (where Vasco da Gama was first buried), and browse the aromatic spice warehouses of Jew Town. Evening: a Kathakali classical dance performance — ancient Kerala storytelling through extraordinary costume and facial expression. Depart via Kochi international airport.
